What is Melasma, Not Just a Blemish?

Melasma is different from common pigmentation problems where melanin pigment is simply overproduced and deposited in the skin.

In the deep dermal layer of the skin, melanocytes, which are pigment cells, become excessively activated.

The melanin produced by these cells tends to spread repeatedly over a wide area.

As a result, it is a complex skin pigmentation disorder that penetrates into the dermal layer and persists long-term.

External stimuli such as UV radiation or hormonal changes can make melanocytes more sensitive.

It is known that microscopic inflammatory reactions and blood vessel-related factors within the skin are also involved in this process.
